The Commons Hub is housed in the historic Hirschwangerhof, a countryside inn built in 1860. Its history is closely tied to the village of Hirschwang, once a center for the wood and paper industry, and Reichenau an der Rax, an early hub for mountaineering and a Habsburg summer retreat. While the rise of mountaineering by the Viennese Nobility in the late 19th century spurred regional tourism, the past 50 years saw industrial and touristic decline, and the village of once over 2000 inhabitants is currently populated by a mere 200 souls.

After years of dwindling visitors, the Hirschwangerhof closed in 2008. In 2013, Thomas Fritsch transformed it into an artist colony, which ran until 2017 before the building was vacated. In 2020, Emil Fritsch and the Digital Engineering Association revived the space to host a three-week hackathon and retreat. The following year, Felix Fritsch and Giulio Quarta founded the Crypto Commons Association and organized the first Crypto Commons Gathering. Since then, the Hub has grown steadily, attracting a vibrant community, diverse themes, and events each year.
